Welcome!
Welcome to our website! You are invited to explore with us the world of OURO Artesania wood carvings. The largest category of our collection is the series of wood sculptures depicting the characters Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from the Spanish novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. But there also exist other bodies of work by the OURO Artesania studio such as religious figures; “genre” figures; bas-relief panels; odds and ends, like sailors and ducks for the souvenir trade; and finally, a special category of superb sculptures we call OURO Santiago.
In the immortal words of the late great Professor Irwin Corey: “We are the world’s foremost authorities.” Well, at least on the wood carvings of OURO Artesania, at this time. After we launch this website and blog we hope we are NOT the great authorities we claim to be. With your help of course, we can build an authoritative storehouse of information about this obscure, almost secretive atelier.
We intend to post blogs in the future about a wide range of topics such as:
Dating the artwork
Evaluating and comparing the many faces of the sculptures, good and bad
Wood types and stains
Comparing OURO sculptures with Black Forest and ANRI pieces
Discovering other less well known European national carving schools
Hunting for missing style numbers
Looking for clues about the individuals who made these pieces
Placing this body of work within the context of major historical events such as the Spanish Civil War, WWII, and post war periods
Finding any information about the company that creates all this work (our biggest mystery!)
We also want to spend some time on the extent of our collection so far, the range of styles and tips and advice on collecting OURO work.
